AFCON AFCON 2023: Egypt Football Association sends apology after disastrous campaign

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have released a statement following their elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Round of 16.

The Pharaohs crashed out of the AFCON in Ivory Coast after a disappointing run of games where they failed to earn a win during 90 minutes of play.

The Pharaohs suffered three back-to-back 2-2 draws in the group stages against Mozambique, Ghana, and Cape Verde respectively before holding DR Congo to a 1-1 stalemate in the round of 16.

As the game went to penalties, it was Mohamed ‘Gabaski’ Abou-Gabal’s miss that allowed DR Congo to capitalise and win the shootout 8-7.

The statement read in part: “The Egyptian Football Association apologises to fans for the results presented by the national football team during their participation in the 2023 African Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast.

“The board will hold a meeting on Sunday to review the technical, medical and administrative reports to take appropriate decisions where needed.”
