AFCON AFCON 2023: Egypt FA defends decision to name legendary Hossam Hassan as coach

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have revealed the reason they settled for legendary Hossam Hassan as the head coach of the national team.

The Pharaohs confirmed Hassan as the new coach following the sacking of Portuguese tactician Rui Vitoria, who failed to guide the team past the round of 16 stage at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

“We unanimously decided to entrust the task of the national team to Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan, with our goal being to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and win the next African Cup of Nations,” said EFA official Abu El-Wafa.

He added: “Hazem Emam has never been short as technical director of the Egyptian national team. He was the first supporter of the twins taking over the coaching of the Pharaohs.

“He has been doing a commendable job since the beginning, working on more than 10 files and completing them all by collaborating with all council members. He used to travel and bring various CVs and present them to us.

“Hossam Hassan will receive a salary close to what he was earning with Future, amounting to approximately one million pounds. Up until this moment, no inspection has been conducted regarding the salary. Especially since he is an Egyptian manager, and matters will be dealt with imminently.”
