Maradona ,the Argentine football legend and World Cup winner, who was convicted in 2005 and ordered to pay 37.2 million euros ($50.4 million), including 23.5 million euros as interest for paying late.

However, the football legend had not stepped foot into Italy since 1990’s when he went under a claim by the Italian government to be owing million of euros as unpaid taxes and amidst claims of positive drug test of cocaine and collusion with mafia dons.

Maradona said last year about his tax claims: “I am not a tax fraudster. I played football and other people signed for me,” Maradona said last year.

“I am not afraid of returning to Italy. I never signed anything. The people who are really responsible are free and can walk around calmly in Naples and I can’t. That’s not fair.

“I want to return to Italy as a gentleman because I never stole anything from anyone.”

Maradona arrived after 1:00pm (1200GMT) at Rome’s Fiumicino airport wearing a black jacket, black suit and dark sun shades.

However, Maradona’s lawyers have claimed that Italian authorities have cleared the debt and this has given the footballer the chance to be in Italy but Italian authorities have rejected such claims.
