Issa Hayatou who is a Veteran Confederation of African Football (CAF) President will run unopposed in the next election after would-be rival Jacques Anouma had his case to run dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
“The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) had proposed the candidature of Mr Anouma for the Presidential election of 10 March 2013, a nomination which was declared inadmissible by the CAF Executive Committee on the ground that Mr Anouma was not and had never been a member of the CAF Executive Committee (a condition provided for in the CAF Statutes adopted in September 2012),” said a statement from the CAS today.
An appeal was submitted last year in December by former FIF President Anouma after the CAF changed its statutes in September which gave only voting members of its Executive Committee the right to run for Presidency, ruling him out of contention.
“It was confirmed that the CAF statutes adopted in September 2012 were applicable in assessing the validity of the candidates in the Presidential election and Anouma did not meet these criteria because he had never been a member of the CAF executive committee,” the statement continued.
Hayatou who has held the Presidency since 1987, is now guaranteed another four-year term following the election, which is due to take place at the CAF Congress this Sunday (March 10) in Marrakech.
