Africa Soccer 28 test positive for coronavirus in Malawi league

Some 28 individuals have tested positive for coronavirus out of 640 that were tested in Malawi Super League.

A statement released by Football Association of Malawi says the test involved footballers, coaches and officials.

Super League of Malawi vice-general secretary, Zacharia Nyirenda, said they have completed conducting the tests on all officials and players.

“We are glad to announce that all the 16 Super League clubs’ players and officials have now gone through the process.

“Out of the 640 people who were tested, 28 came out positive. About 16 are from the Northern Region, 8 from the Central Region while the Southern Region registered 4 cases.

“These people have been in a 10-day self-isolation. Those from the South and Centre were on Wednesday re-tested after their isolation period elapsed and we are waiting for the results. Those from the North are still in isolation,” Nyirenda said.

The tests were conducted in line with guidelines provided in Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19.

The guidelines were put in place ahead of the scheduled kick-off of the league in Malawi at the end of this month.

A Charity Shield will kick-start the league on the weekend of November 21 followed by Super League kick off on November 28.

Nyasa Big Bullets are the defending champions of the 16-member Malawi league.
