Africa Soccer ZAMBIA : 2012 Afcon-winning keeper returns to Chipolopolo squad

Zambia coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has recalled veteran goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene to the Chipolopolo squad.

The comeback of Mweene, who last featured for Zambia in 2018, proves that Micho is determined to win the forthcoming Cosafa Cup in South Africa.

The Serbian mentor has released his provisional 30-member squad ahead of Southern Africa’s premier football showpiece to run from July 7 to 18 in Port Elizabeth.

Mweene, whose post-match penalty heroics helped Zambia lift the AFCON trophy in 2012 in Gabon, is among four South Africa-based Zambian players in the squad.

The 36-year-old will compete for the number one jersey with Cyril Chibwe of GladAfrica Championship side Polokwane City.

Other South-based players in the squad are defender Roderick Kabwe (Black Leopards), Salulani Phiri (Polokwane City), Augustine Mulenga (Amazulu), Gamphani Lungu (Supersport United) and Justin Shonga (Cape Town City)

Earlier, Micho said he wants to win the Cosafa Cup and use it to prepare for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Zambia are in the same Cosafa Group B alongside rivals Malawi, Comoros and Madagascar.
