Dstv Premiership TP Mazembe defender Chongo reveals AmaZulu interest

Zambian defender Kabaso Chongo has revealed that South Africa’s DStv Premiership side AmaZulu are interested in his services.

Chongo revealed AmaZulu’s interest after returning late to his Democratic Republic of the Congo employers, TP Mazembe for pre-season training.

He said his participation with Chipolopolo in the Cosafa Cup held in South Africa last month and the subsequent interest from Benni McCarthy-led AmaZulu contributed to his late return to Mazembe

“I am very happy to resume training. My delay is justified by two factors: my presence at COSAFA and the discussions I was to have with the South African club AmaZulu. I must respect my contract, any club that requests me must contact TPM as advised by the president,” Mazembe website quotes Chongo saying.

However, the dread-locked centre-back fell short of guaranteeing his stay at Mazembe with whom he has a running contract until June 2023.

I want to stay at TPM, but if I have to leave, it must be done on a regular basis. My departure will only be recorded if the club that wants me agrees with the TPM,” Chongo added.

The Zambian might face sanctions at the Congolese giants for the delayed return.

Because of this absence, the player knows what to expect in accordance with the internal regulations,” Mazembe website warned.

It looks unlikely that McCarthy would push for the signing of Chongo as the AmaZulu mentor has since signed six players, including defenders Tercious Malepe and Philani Zulu.

Chongo earned his recall to Zambia national team for the Cosafa Cup, having earlier been dropped by the then coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic.

Micho dropped Chongo in October 2020 after a friendly in Kenya saying it was for technical reasons.

The 31-year-old Chongo signed for Mazembe in 2013 from Konkola Mine Police FC in Zambia.
