Champions League Coach Mosimane admits Al Ahly struggled to beat Al Merreikh

Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has admitted that the CAF Champions League holders struggled in the 3-1 win over Al Merreikh in a Group A match played on Friday evening.

However, the outspoken South African mentor said what mattered was not the performance but the maximum points that kept chances of qualifying for the quarterfinals alive.

It was a very difficult game. A big game. We played it well spiritually and tactically. We needed a victory and we got it,” Mosimane told Al Ahly website.

However, I can’t say that I’m satisfied with the performance. We still have an important game coming up.”

“We have to respect the club and the emblem. I know my team didn’t play very well. Winning today’s game is the most important thing.”

“Finally, I’m happy we didn’t get any red cards. We respected Al Merrikh and we got what we needed out of the game.”

Meanwhile, South African forward Percy Tau, who was among the scorers, was replaced after picking a knock alongside Mohamed Hany.

Al Ahly say Tau suffered a bruise in his knee and he will undergo more examinations when the team returns to training after eight days.

Hany suffered pain in his adductor muscle. Al Ahly will return to training on 27 February to start preparing for our game the final game against Al Hilal
