Nigeria NPFL Round-Up: Rivers United Holds On To Top Spot As Five Stars Rangers Defeat Lobi

8It was a festival of goals in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) which reached midway with Matchday 19.

Matchday 19 of the NPFL produced so much intrigues as Rivers United and Plateau United maintained their winning streak.

Rivers United have now gone nine games unbeaten losing to only Plateau United so far.

Plateau United also are unbeaten in 11 matches and the last time they lost was January 23rd against Wikki Tourists.

A total of 30 goals was scored with Rivers Rivers United and Enugu recording the highest win of the week.

No away team won away from home as three games ended in a draw with two ending goalless.

RIVERS UNITED 4-1 AKWA UNITED

Defending champions Akwa United continued to fumble as they were once again stunned by Rivers United at the Adokiye Amiesiemeka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

NPFL golden boot chaser, Ishaq Rafiu gave Rivers United the lead just seven minutes of play from the spot.

Former MFM FC player, Chijioke Akuneto stole the show as he scored a hat trick to give the hosts a comfortable lead in the first half.

Austin Osayande scored the consolation goal for Akwa United as Rivers United firmly hold their grips to the top place in the NPFL.

PLATEAU UNITED 2-0 SUNSHINE STARS

Plateau United kept the chase on Rivers United as Fidelis Ilechukwu lads quest for a continental ticket remain on course with another resounding 2-0 win against Sunshine Stars.

A goal in the both half by Mohammed Zulkifilu in the 22nd minute and Haggai Katoh’s 68th minute goal was all Plateau United needed.

REMO STARS 3-0 KWARA UNITED

Remo Stars bounced back to winning ways at their Ikenne fortress following a 3-0 win against Kwara United.

Andy Okpe once again found the net in the opener two minutes into the second half after Kwara United put up a strong performancece in the first half.

Tolulope Ojo doubled the lead in the 56th minute before Seun Ogunribide 82nd minute goal put the game beyond reach for the visitors.

RANGERS 5-3 LOBI STARS

Five stars Enugu Rangers put up a superb performance against visiting Lobi Stars in an eight goal thriller.

The Flying Antelopes opened scoring in the 10th minute through Kenechukwu Agu who scored from the spot.

Osy Martins brace put the hosts in a 3-0 comfortable position heading to the break.

Chidiebere Nwobodo made it 4-0 just two minutes to the resumption of the second half.

Lobi Stars scared the hosts as they began to fight back for the equalizer as Raphael Ayagwa 57th minute spot kick made it 4-1.

Joshua Akhabue made it 4-2 in the 66th minute as the game became more interesting giving the fans a treat for their ticket.

Agu doused the hope for a comeback for the visitors as he scored the fifth goal for the Flying Antelopes.

Douglas Achiv scored the pulled another one. back for Lobi Stars in the 81st minute but it was too late for as Rangers got the maximum points.

KANO PILLARS 3-1 GOMBE UNITED

Kano Pillars returned to winning ways as they picked a 3-1 win against visiting Gombe United with veteran NPFL, Rabiu Ali on the scoresheet for the Sai Masu Gida.

Ifeanyi Eze got the hosts with a brace in the 12th and 38th minute in a keenly played game.

Yusuf Abdulazeez reduced the deficit for the visitors in the 45th minute before the break.

Ali scored a mercurial goal with two minutes to end the game to hand Kano Pillars the three points.

In other games played, Dakkada FV defeated Niger Tornadoes 2-1 while the last game of Matchday 19 played under the flood light saw Shooting Stars earned a vital home win against Nasarawa United.

Anietie Uko scored the lone goal of the game in the 13th minute.

Katsina United held Abia Warriors to a 2-2 draws at Okigwe.

Enyimba shared the points with Wikki Tourists as Heartland also claimed a point against MFM in another goalless draw.
