AFCON Uganda defender Mugabi says 2023 AFCON qualification remains ultimate goal

Uganda defender Bevis Mugabi has said qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals remains the Cranes’ ultimate goal.

“Qualifying for AFCON ultimately is the target, I don’t think any player came here as passengers and not to compete,” the Motherwell player said.

The England-based defender spoke to Uganda FA website ahead of Saturday’s game against former AFCON champions Algeria at The 5 July 1962 Stadium in a Group F qualifier.

Mugabe said he was personally yearning for a return to AFCON having last done so in the 2019 edition held in Egypt.

For me personally, I want to play in Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations, we are ready, and we are going to do everything to make that happen,” he said.

Mugabi featured in a practice match against Hammam Sousse, which the Cranes won 8-1.

Uganda will have a final warm up match against Al Ahli Tripoli FC before relocating to Algeria.

The Cranes under coach Micho are on a rebuilding phase following the retirement of veterans such as goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

The Cranes will also take on Niger on June 8 while chasing a slot at the next AFCON edition scheduled for Ivory Coast.
