UEFA Champions League UCL: Tuchel Sets To Hand Aubameyang His Debut Against Dinamo

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could make his Chelsea’s debut in the opening UEFA Champions League Group E matchup against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.

After joining from Barcelona in a £10.3 million move on the final day of the transfer window, Blues manager Thomas Tuchel believes his new addition is “welcome to show a point.”

Due to the jaw injuries he sustained during a brutal robbery at his house last week, Aubameyang will have to play with a mask.

He only saw eight minutes of action this year for Barcelona.

The 33-year-old Gabonese attacker “needs minutes to get his full fitness and rhythm,” according to Tuchel, and must be “managed.”

The German added: “He cannot play 90 minutes so it’s on us to find a solution if he comes from the bench or he starts.”

Aubameyang, a former striker for Arsenal, has worn a character mask before to celebrate strikes.

When asked if Aubameyang was suitable to wear a mask and play the “superhero,” Tuchel replied: “Don’t put any more thoughts into his brain, please.

When he scores he can celebrate but first of all he needs to score.

“He is very ambitious and very focussed. He is hungry to play for us and prove a point.

“That is why he is here and that’s what we have felt from the first moment.”

Denis Zakaria, a fellow new signing, travelled to Croatia with the team, according to Tuchel, while experienced defender Thiago Silva, 37, has stayed in London to manage his workload.

“We decided with Thiago he will have a break from the travelling and the stress after playing every minute in very intense matches so far,” he said.

“It was the moment to give him a break instead of putting him on the bench and have the travel issues so he can take care of his recovery.

“Then we had the opportunity to take everybody who is in training and is available, and that includes Denis.”
