Nigeria Premier League NPFL: Remo Stars Stun Warriors As Akwa Share Points With Insurance

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) MatchDay 11 results did not change the table log in either group as Remo Stars, Abia Warriors, and Niger Tornadoes made major progress on the log.

The midweek fixtures generated a total of 21 goals from nine matches played Wednesday evening, despite the postponement of the top of Group B tie between Rivers United and Lobi Stars.

The Port Harcourt team is competing in the CAF Confederation Cup in Cote d’Ivoire.

High flying Bendel Insurance were held to a 1-1 draw by Akwa United at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Insurance were the first to score, doing so in the second minute thanks to in-form striker Imade Osarenkhoe.

Nevertheless, in the 38th minute, Cyril Olisema of Akwa United equalized before halftime.

Both teams produced numerous chances but were unable to convert any of them, resulting in a draw.

Insurance therefore maintained their unbeaten streak and moved closer to securing a position in the Championship Playoffs.

When Akwa United failed to avenge their season-opening 2-0 crushing defeat at home to Insurance, Remo Stars displaced them from second place with to their 2-1 away win over El-Kanemi Warriors.

Remo Stars made it two wins in a row in the second half of the season, thanks to goals from Andrew Okpe in the 60th minute and skipper Nduka Junior in the 87th.

El Kanemi Warriors are eight points from safety with seven games remaining, making it increasingly doubtful that they will remain in the NPFL next season.

In Aba, former champions Enyimba drew for the second time in a row and missed out on a chance to return to the playoffs after a 1-1 with Nasarawa United.

Chukwuemeka Obioma, the season’s leading scorer, converted a penalty in the 15th minute to give the NPFL record winners the lead, but the Solid Miners equalized in the 75th minute to grab a crucial point in their fight for promotion.

Nasarawa United remains ninth in Group A, four points from safety, while Enyimba has dropped to fourth, one point out of the playoff berths.

Shooting Stars Sporte Club (3SC) of Ibadan has moved up to sixth place in the table thanks to a 3-2 win over former champions Plateau United.

Plateau United took the lead in the 22nd minute with Yakubu Adam, but 3SC equalized in the 43rd through Samuel Ayorinde. Ayorinde scored his brace in the 50th minute, while Falke Ghali added a third for the hosts.

Plateau United scored a late goal to make the score 3-2.

Anayo Ogbonna scored the sole goal in the 39th minute for the hosts, Gombe United, to upset Kwara United and go up to sixth in the log.

Abia Warriors completed the double over Enugu Rangers in Group B with a 2-1 win in the Oriental Derby.

Jimoh Gbadamosi gave the Warriors an early lead with a penalty conversion in the eighth minute, but veteran defender John Uche equalized for the Flying Antelopes in the 22nd minute, and the game looked destined for a draw until Uche Odeh scored in the second minute of stoppage time to give Umuahia all three points.

Abia Warriors remained third on the log, one point behind Lobi Stars and Rivers United, who did not play this week.

Meanwhile, Sunshine Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Doma United in Akure, denying them a chance to move into the playoffs.

The Stars gained the lead in the 14th minute, but it lasted only 60 seconds when Doma equalized through Pascal Nwabueze.

After a 2-0 victory over Wikki Tourists, Niger Tornadoes moved up to fourth on the log.

In the 22nd minute, David Okouromi gave the Tornadoes the lead, and Mark Daniel clinched the victory with a second half stoppage time goal.

Tornadoes and Abia Warriors both have 18 points but are out of the playoffs due to a lower goal difference.

Wikki, on the other hand, has dropped into the relegation zone and is currently ninth in the standings.

Ultimately, Bayelsa United pulled out of the relegation zone in Group B after a 1-1 draw with Dakkada in Uyo.

Robert Mizo, the Group B leading scorer, put Bayelsa ahead in the fourth minute, but Mmekut Udosen equalized for Dakkada.

Nonetheless, it was insufficient to lift them off the bottom of the table on 8 points.
