African players abroad Salah Goal Puts Pressure On Manchester United In Top Four Race

Mohamed Salah goal for Liverpool increased the pressure on Manchester United and moved four points out of fourth place.

Salah’s winning goal against Fulham also brought him closer to tying a Steven Gerrard record.

For the first time since April of last year, a fifth straight Premier League win was achieved without any of the excitement or histrionics of Sunday’s 4-3 victory against Tottenham.

Salah moved to 185 goals with the club, one behind Steven Gerrard, and moved up to seventh on the team’s all-time league scorers list with 136 goals after converting his second penalty of the game in the 39th minute following back-to-back misses.

Following a Football Association misconduct charge for remarks about Sunday’s referee Paul Tierney, manager Jurgen Klopp’s conduct in the technical area was the epitome of exemplary.

He has until Friday to reply to the allegations, and given that he has already served a one-match suspension this season, he may have been trying to get the most out of his time on the sidelines.

In his program notes, Klopp noted that they had some issues after jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead against Tottenham, a game they went on to win with a goal in stoppage time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold alone had three efforts on goal in the first 10 minutes, and even though they started off looking like they may repeat that, they missed some of the crispness they had displayed at the weekend.

Additionally, Fulham was better organized than their fellow Londoners, which reduced opportunities to, at most, a 50/50 chance.

Alexander-Arnold moved towards midfield to take use of his advanced position and get closer to his opponent’s goal, however, unusually for him, he missed his target on two of his shots and fired another harmlessly at Bernd Leno.

Although he managed to get past a few defenders near the byline and Salah’s cross narrowly missed Darwin Nunez from eight yards out, Luis Diaz also saw one of his shots deflected wide.

In Fulham’s own final third, Liverpool had considerably less control than they did in the opposition’s, frequently recovering possession before Fulham could mount any sort of meaningful offense.

After Harry Wilson, a former Liverpool winger, entered the space behind Kostas Tsimikas, Virgil Van Dijk had to slide in to turn Harry Wilson’s cross behind, and Carlos Vinicius took advantage of Ibrahima Konate’s hesitation to force an excellent save from Alisson Becker.

It was expected that a counter-press would result in the breakthrough after Nunez lost control of the ball 15 yards outside of Fulham’s penalty area.

Issa Diop received a short pass from Tosin Adarabioyo, but the centre-half, who had returned to the lineup after Tim Ream’s season-ending injury, took too long to clear the ball, and Nunez was on him like a shot to nick the ball off his toes, catching the forward’s back leg as he passed him.

Salah converted the penalty the same way he did against Tottenham, blasting the ball straight down the centre after Stuart Attwell made the call.
Much remained the same in the second half, with Liverpool applying the lion’s share of the pressure without particularly emphasizing their advantage.

With only 13 minutes remaining, Alisson had to make a strong stop on Vinicius to preserve their tenuous chance of making the Champions League. This made their tenuous lead vulnerable.

They are still counting on United to lose, though, since their bitter rivals still have two games remaining, beginning on Thursday at Brighton.
