COSAFA Cosafa: Malawi sink Seychelles to stay top, Zambia pick first win

Malawi continued with their fine start at the Hollywoodbets SA Cosafa Cup after defeating Seychelles 2-0 at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday.

The Flames were forced to wait until the second half when Lanjesi Nkhoma scored in the 55th minute before Christopher Kumwembe doubled their lead in the 65th minute and extend their winning run in the competition.

The first half ended goalless and second half Malawi came firing, finding the back of the net through Nkhoma who headed home a Chawanangwa Kaonga effort. Malawi could not sit back but kept pressuring Seychelles and found a second goal from striker Kumwembe who finished a Lanjesi Nkhoma rebound 10 minutes later.

There was nothing for Seychelles despite making changes as they only registered one shot on target the whole match with Malawi recording six. In another Group B fixture, Zambia picked their first victory after defeating 10-man Comoros 2-1 at the same venue.

Fredrick Mulambia put Zambia ahead in the 51st minute but Comoros drew level when Affane Said Djambae with a beautifully taken effort past the Zambia keeper Tresford Mulenga in the 67th minute. Albert Kangwanda helped Zambia to regain their lead in the 74th minute and Comoros’ chances to get something from the game were dashed in the 77th minute when defender Bakri Youssouf was sent off for a second bookable offense.

Malawi are topping Group B with six points, Zambia are second with three, while Comoros are third with three points. Malawi has Comoros to face on Tuesday in their last game in the group stages. A draw will see them qualify even if Zambia wins their last match against Seychelles on the same day.
