Ghana Fatawu Joins Leicester On Season-Long Loan From sporting Lisbon

Abdul Fatawu has been signed by Leicester City Football Club on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon, subject to league and international approval.

The young 19-year-old Ghanaian joins the team of Enzo Maresca for the 2023–24 Sky Bet Championship season after making an early impression at the domestic and international levels of his career.

Fatawu said: “I’m so happy. This is an amazing moment for me, I’m happy to be here.

“For me, from looking at Leicester and how I felt about the coach, here is the best place for me.

“This was the best moment for me to join Leicester.

“I chose them because I think they can grow me and help me mature.

“[Enzo Maresca] told me about the plans he has for me and how he wants me to play – how he wants to help me in my football.”

Fatawu, who was up in Tamale, Ghana, began his professional career with Steadfast FC and rapidly became recognised as one of the most promising players in his native land.

His performances for Steadfast FC led to a loan transfer to Dreams FC of Ghana’s Premier Division in October 2021.

There, he continued his impressive play before making the jump to Sporting Lisbon in April 2022.

He played in their UEFA Champions League campaign the previous year and made his senior debut for the Portuguese team against Rio Ave in August 2022.

He achieved success on the international stage in March 2021 when he assisted Ghana’s Under-20 team in winning the Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.

He was also awarded player of the event at that time.

He has played 14 times at the senior level for his nation, including last year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
