AFCON Afcon 2023: Jordan Ayew eyes more with Ghana after new milestone

Ghana forward Jordan Ayew has set sights on making more appearances for the Black Stars after reaching another milestone in his international career on Thursday.

Ayew is currently the fourth most-capped Black Stars player following his involvement in the side’s 2-1 win over Central Africa Republic in the final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Crystal Palace striker led the Black Stars in the absence of his senior brother, Andre Ayew to beat their opponent at the Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday. The 31-year-old has now tied John Paintsil’s feat with 91 matches, trailing only his brother Andre Ayew (114), Asamoah Gyan (109), and Richard Kingston (93) in the standings.

“I’m surprised, I didn’t even know, is a proud moment, it’s an achievement and you know I’m still young and I have to keep going. I feel fit, I feel strong and I know that I still have more years to come,” said Ayew, who made his debut for the Black Stars in 2010, adding: “It’s a blessing I was able to start for the national team very early, it’s a positive thing and I just want to thank all the managers that were here in the past and even now, and I really want to thank them for the confidence.

I need to keep going because I have a lot of years ahead of me.”

On surpassing his brother Andre Ayew, who is the most-capped player, the Black Star said, “I don’t think about breaking records, I just think of keep playing my football; enjoy my football and putting in good displays.”
