Spain Rubiales Denies Wrongdoing In Court Over Hermoso Kissing

The judge probing the kiss on Jenni Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup last month questioned former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales, who denied any wrongdoing.

The incident happened following Spain’s triumph over England in the World Cup championship match last month in Sydney.

Rubiales, 46, has insisted that the kiss was reciprocal and voluntary. Rubiales, who was already under FIFA’s suspension, resisted calls for him to resign as president of the Spanish FA for weeks until finally resigning on September 10.

Hermoso informed prosecutors that Rubiales kissed her on the mouth without her permission while holding her head with both hands, but last week prosecutor Marta Durantez Gil filed a complaint against Rubiales with the High Court.

After Hermoso claimed that Rubiales and his supporters exerted pressure on her and her family to state that she “justified and approved what happened,” the prosecutor added a potential crime of coercion.

In a one-hour closed-door session on Friday, Rubiales was questioned by the judge and, according to the state prosecutor’s office, he rejected both charges.

State prosecutors requested that the judge take into account imposing a restraining order that would forbid Rubiales from approaching Hermoso within 500 yards or from attempting to contact her, as well as a demand that he report to a court every 15 days to make sure he does not depart the nation.

If those sanctions are to be used, the judge must make that decision.

Outside the National Court, neither Rubiales nor his defence attorney Olga Tubau talked to the media.

The investigation is being led by Judge Francisco de Jorge, who will also make the decision about whether the case will go to trial.

If it does, Rubiales could be sentenced to one to four years in prison.

De Jorge has asked a number of media outlets, including the public broadcaster TVE, to submit him footage of the incident and any subsequent films, including one in which the players are shown celebrating with Rubiales on a bus while making what appears to be a lighthearted reference to the kiss. It can take months to complete the probe.

Following the Rubiales incident, Spanish players declared they would not play again until the Spanish FA hierarchy was overhauled.

Before Rubiales resigned last week, Jorge Vilda, the head coach of Spain, was fired.
