Kenya McKinstry: More yet to come from FKF champions Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has sent a warning to FKF Premier League rivals that they are yet to see the best of his side after clobbering Nairobi City Stars 4-1 at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

A double from last season’s Golden Boot runner-up Benson Omalla, and goals apiece from Rooney Onyango and Austin Odhiambo enabled K’Ogalo to dismantle a disjointed Simba wa Nairobi and move joint top on the 18-team table with Posta Rangers, who claimed a 3-1 victory against Sofapaka.

Speaking after the game, the former Uganda Cranes tactician admitted being impressed with his players’ display rating them seven out of 10, and further promised more from the reigning champions in subsequent matches.

“I am very delighted with the way we played, and I want to rate ourselves at seven out of ten,” said McKinstry, adding: “We played very well, we were more technical today (Sunday) than any other day in the league this season and I want to state there is a lot more to come because we have not reached the higher levels that we have desired to reach.”

McKinstry added: “It was a statement performance, and it was the kind of display I have been looking for, it was a very different performance from my lads (more passing, more flowing football), and before the game, we told the players that we wanted a statement result and display and they did exactly that, it was a huge improvement from our last match.”

City Stars coach Nicholas Muyoti blamed the defeat on schoolboy blunders by his players and promised to rectify the same before their next league assignment. “We conceded goals because of schoolboy mistakes, especially in the first half, our confidence was not good at all, we were not passing the ball well, we failed to command the game, and our communication was lacking, in short, most our plans didn’t go right, nothing was working for us,” said Muyoti.

He continued: “I have a squad of young players and playing at this stage for the first time is proving difficult for them and I know it will take a bit of time for the players to get used to the stage they are playing, but we will do our best to make sure they are in the best stage of mind and playing at the level we expect.”

Gor Mahia will next visit Western Kenya to face Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday while City Stars will be out to make amends when they come up against Nzoia Sugar at Kasarani Annex on Saturday.
