Rwanda Gitego’s late strike earns Marines comeback draw against APR FC

Marines FC came from behind twice to pick a point against APR FC after both sides played out to a pulsating 2-2 Rwandan Premier League draw at Umuganda Stadium on Saturday.

An 89th minute goal from striker Arthur Gitego completed the comeback for the Rubavu-based side who upset the league champions in a thrilling match day 4 encounter. Nigerian forward Victor Mbaoma who had netted a hat trick against Marines in preseason fired the visitors ahead with a cool finish in the 12th minute. Marines pushed so hard for an equalizer but APR remained strong in defense, going into half-time leading the scores.

Marines finally canceled the army side’s lead in the 62nd minute through Olivier Usabimana. But the celebrations did not take long as APR banged in and regained the lead just seven minutes later through Innocent Nshuti to get back on track. They were not able to break the Marines’s defense afterward as the home team remained cautious and resolute at the back by defending gallantly.

With APR heading to victory, striker Arthur Gitego popped up with a fantastic finish in the 89th minute to make it 2-2 as he broke the heart of the defending League Champions. There was not much action in injury time as both teams held on to the 2-2 draw.
