Premier League Two key Newcastle United players to miss clash against Arsenal

Alexander Isak and Sven Botman have both been ruled out of Newcastle United’s match against Arsenal this week, as the host’s injury list grows.

Ahead of the fixture, Eddie Howe gave some fitness updates on his squad, including ruling a couple of players out of the weekend clash with Arsenal. Previous reports on Alexander Isak had suggested he could miss the Arsenal match, and Eddie Howe confirmed they’re looking to get the striker back “after the international break”.\

Sven Botman has also been ruled out, with Howe saying: “There’s an issue there. We are working through various options to try & diagnose the injury properly. Does he fall into the longer-term category? Yeah, perhaps. But we’re awaiting clarity.”

Newcastle have a number of other existing injury problems, with Harvey Barnes suffering a foot injury, Jacob Murphy looking to need an operation on his shoulder, and Elliot Anderson struggling with a lower back stress fracture. All three of the above players are unlikely to play before the very end of 2023, so there’s no chance of a return this weekend.

Then there’s young Lewis Miley, who is currently out of action through illness. Howe recently confirmed Miley has glandular fever and would have four weeks of lower physical exertion before building back up. Finally, Sandro Tonali will miss the Arsenal match through suspension, having been banned from football due to his illegal involvement in betting whilst in Italy. His 10-month ban is now underway.

Newcastle will still be able to start all of the players who were involved in their last Premier League fixture, which would mean a lineup like the following: Pope, Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Burn, Guimaraes, Longstaff, Joelinton, Almiron, Gordon.
