FIFA U17 WORLD CUP FIFA U-17: Senegal Defeat Poland To Reach Knockout Stage

Senegal defeated Poland handily and advanced to the round of 16 thanks to a hat-trick from Idrissa Gueye.

After losing for the second time in a row, the Poles are still at the bottom of the standings and may be eliminated if Japan wins their match against Argentina later today.

Senegal will guarantee qualification with a match remaining unless La Albiceleste triumph, having demonstrated their superiority in this weather-affected match.

By the time the referee had to temporarily pause play due to lightning overhead, the African aspirations were ahead 2-0.

Gueye had given them the lead with a close-range stab before Dominik Szala of Poland had given them an awful own goal to double their lead.

The large striker eliminated any remaining doubt about the outcome of the game by demonstrating incredible movement early in the second half to make it 3-0 with a nearly exact replica of his first. In fact, Gueye restored Senegal’s three-goal lead just three minutes after Marcel Regula’s deflected attempt gave Poland a response on 66 minutes. Gueye charged in to capture the match ball and score a powerful header.
