UEFA Champions League We Played Poorly Against Leipzig- Ancelotti Admits

Despite their run to the Champions League quarterfinals, Carlo Ancelotti was unable to find much praise for his Real Madrid team’s performance against RB Leipzig.

At the Bernabeu, Los Blancos and their Bundesliga opponents drew 1-1 to earn a 2-1 aggregate victory. A header by Willi Orban negated a fantastic second-half goal by Vinicius Junior.

Leipzig was clearly the superior squad that evening, managing to produce 20 shots on goal to their hosts’ meagre 12.

And Ancelotti is well aware that his team did not perform to the level that was expected of them, especially with star player Jude Bellingham making his way back into the starting lineup following an injury that kept him out of the first leg.

64-year-old Italian coach: “The game was bad. We played poorly, with little intensity and with little concern.

The psychological aspect has affected us a lot.

” We were playing against an opponent who has quality and has nothing to lose. We played with brakes on from the beginning.

“We struggled, but the important thing was to be in the quarter-finals.

“The mental aspect has been important. Leipzig have tried everything, they’re a good team. We have to calmly assess what has happened.

“At this point in the season we are seven points clear in the league and we are in the quarter-finals. You have to be self-critical, but not too much.”

Real has only experienced win in two of their previous five games across all competitions as a result of their tie with Leipzig.

Despite having drawn two of the previous three La Liga games, Los Blancos still hold a comfortable advantage over Girona and bitter rivals Barcelona in the standings.

Real Madrid has won the Champions League a record 14 times, but if they hope to participate in the later stages of the competition, their performances must start to improve quickly.
