CAF CONFEDERATION CUP CAFCC: RS Berkane Sends Abu Salim Out On 3-2 Aggregate

After overcoming Libya’s Abu Salim 3-2 on Sunday, Moroccan team Renaissance Berkane earned a spot in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup semifinals by winning a thrilling second half that saw five goals scored.

In an exciting encounter that saw five goals scored in one half and two players sent off, the 2020 and 2022 title winners showed their tenacity in the second leg match.

During stoppage time, as both teams battled for the win, Abu Salim’s Hossam El Abani and Berkane’s Omar El Arjoun were told to march.

After a goalless draw in Benghazi during the first leg of the quarterfinal match, Berkane emerged victorious.

Asofu Dayo, an international for Burkina Faso, was the hero when he gave Berkane his third goal late into stoppage time, setting off wild celebrations among the home crowd.

As a result, Berkane advances 3-2 overall and will play the defending champions, USM Alger, in what could be an exciting matchup.

Despite efforts from both teams, the first half ended in a goalless draw.

The host team faced stiff opposition from the Libyan defence, which thwarted every move made by the team led by Mouin Chaabani of Tunisia.

Hossam El Abani gave Abu Salim the lead in the 47th minute, shocking the Moroccans as they surged forward into the second half.

But in the 68th minute, Senegalese player Boubacar Fall answered for Berkane. In the 72nd minute, Moroccan defender Adil Tahif gave Berkane his second goal, making the score 2-1 in favour of the Moroccans over the Libyans.

The game became more intense in the 83rd minute when Abd El Moumen El Ayan of Abu Salim managed to equalise, demonstrating their refusal to give up.

The third goal for Renaissance Berkane was scored by Youssef El Fahli in the 90+10th minute, however the goal was overturned by VAR after a review. With a third goal in the 90+15 minute, the Berkane players’ efforts paid off, securing their passage to the competition’s semi-finals.
