CAF Champions League CCL: Sundowns will bank on recent record to defeat Esperance – Mokwena

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says their recent record in the CAF Champions League speaks volumes of how far the squad can go this year ahead of facing Esperance in the semifinals.

The Brazilians arrived in Tunisia earlier this week for the first leg at the Stade Olympique de Rades at 9pm SA time on Saturday. “If you look at the last couple of years, we have shown that it’s probably true – but for the first time in the club’s history we have done back to back semifinals,” said Mokwena.

“We have a clear understanding that actually the Champions league starts at the knockouts, the responsibility of the group stages is to make sure that you qualify, there goes our objective number one,” added Mokwena.

Mokwena added that Downs’ run in the Premier Soccer League [PSL] while also juggling the Champions League is testament to their ability, while their rivals on the continent are struggling with the busy schedule.

“I’m proud of this group, proud of the success they have had in domestic competitions. I don’t even have to look where Al Ahly is in their domestic competition or where Wydad is. This is testament of what this group has managed to achieve, back to back league titles, back to back semi-finals,” he concluded.
