Football Premier League : Ryan Giggs signs new deal

Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Ryan Giggs after he signed a new one-year Manchester United deal.

It means Giggs, who could play the 1,000th game of his career against Norwich today, will be playing for United when he turns 40 in November.

The United boss said: “What an incredible career he’s had. He could play his 1,000th career game against Norwich. He’ll certainly be involved on Tuesday against Real Madrid, so somewhere along the line he will play his 1,000th game this week, which is phenomenal.

“In the modern game it’s unique and I don’t think it will be achieved again by anyone.

“Ryan deserved another contract because his form hasn’t changed over the last few years.

“He still has that youthfulness in the way he plays, great balance, still has a change of pace, still has fitness and gets you a goal, so he really deserves a new contract.

“Next season Ryan will do exactly what he’s done this season. He’ll be used the right way.

“He’ll come on, play in games and be star man. His performance level is incredible.”

Sir Alex said United would retain Giggs on their coaching staff when he eventually stops playing. “That’s the plan,” said Ferguson. “We’ve done the same with Nicky Butt, who is with the reserves. Paul Scholes was last year, and when he finishes he’ll do exactly the same.

“We’re good in keeping former players installed in the club in different capacities like Mike Phelan and Brian McClair.

“It’s important we install players who have the experience of playing here.”

Giggs said: “I’m feeling good, enjoying my football more than ever and most importantly I’m making a contribution to the team.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract. This is an exciting team to be part of, with great team spirit, and we are again pushing for honours as we head towards the business end of the season.”
