Africa Soccer Manuel Kambala Scored A Goal That Changed The Fate Of The PSL

Manuel Kambala scored the goal that denied Kaizer Chiefs their first league title in five seasons. And Baroka FC midfielder reports he received a lot of messages after the match, some even threatening.

Back in September, Amakhosi were on their way to be crowned 2019/20 Absa Premiership champions when the Mozambican got up the highest in the 59th minute to cancel out Khama Billiat’s opener.

Kambala met Gerald Phiri’s inswinging free-kick with a powerful header to beat Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune. And the game resulted in 1-1 draw. All Chiefs needed was a win to secure the title. And in the end Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned league champions for the third successive season.

The 29-year-old who broke Amakhosi supporters’ hearts on the day says he meant no harm. As he was only trying to save his team from relegation.

I received many messages, different messages.” Kambala tells KickOff.com.

“Some came from Baroka supporters. Some came from Chiefs supporters. Some of them were encouraging like ‘yeah you scored a good goal’. And some of them were saying how they don’t like me. Because I scored that goal.

“They sent messages to my Instagram, and Facebook. The ones from Kaizer Chiefs supporters, they were negative obviously [laughs].

“But there was one guy from Pirates who said. ‘Yeah, I like what you did. Because I don’t like Chiefs. At least Sundowns win the league. Because those guys are talking too much.’

“But immediately after the final whistle, the Chiefs players congratulated me. Yah that was my best goal in the PSL. Because it saved us from relegation. It was a goal that decided the season. That’s why I say it’s my best goal.

“There’s only one guy I met at the Mall of the North at a shop who said, ‘Hey my man! You killed us with that goal of yours. We will kill you.’ But after that he said, ‘No I’m only joking.’ It was only that one who threatened me [laughs].”
