African players abroad Senegalese defender Sabaly out of two World Cup qualifiers

Defender Youssouf Sabaly has been ruled out of the forthcoming World Cup qualifying matches for Senegal due to an injury.

The right-back suffered a left leg muscle tear during a warm-up match for Real Betis in Spain when they were playing against AS Roma on August 7 2021.

Betis Manager Manuel Pellegrini told a news conference in Spain that Sabaly will be out for months.

Youssouf Sabaly will not be with us for a few month,” the former Manchester City boss said.

Betis has since confirmed on their website that Sabaly has undergone surgery successfully.

“…the player has been operated satisfactorily this afternoon at the Viamed Hospital by doctors Ribera, Montilla and Muela, belonging to the traumatology services of Real Betis. The recovery periods of the player will depend on their evolution,” Betis announced on their website.

The 28-year-old, who joined Betis from Bordeaux on a free transfer, missed his team’s La Liga opening match which ended 1-1 against Mallorca.

The defender will also miss the World Cup qualifying matches for Senegal against Togo on September 1 and Congo Brazzaville six days later.
