Malawi Silver go level on points with struggling leaders Bullets

Silver Strikers put their TNM Super League title chase firmly on track after edging out Blue Eagles 2-1, to go level on points with leaders Nyasa Big Bullets who dropped more points.

Seasoned winger Blessings Tembo and in-form striker Stain Davie scored in Lilongwe on Sunday as Silver took their tally to 49 points from 25 games, having played one game more than Bullets.

Eagles are on position 12 with 27 points from 26 games following the third consecutive league loss and fourth in all competitions.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored Silver took advantage of the struggles of Bullets who drew 0-0 with hosts Mzuzu Warriors on Sunday, a day after suffering a 1-0 loss to Moyale Barracks in Mzuzu.

Bullets have 49 points from 24 games whereas Moyale are fifth on 40 points from 25 games.

Slightly down the table, Karonga United and Mighty Wanderers, who beat Kamuzu Barracks 4-0 and drew 0-0 with Ntopwa FC on Saturday, are on third and fourth places with 43 and 42 points.

Clement Nyondo bagged a double, Victor Lungu and Mphatso Kamanga joined him on the scoresheet for Karonga in Saturday’s win to leave Kamuzu Barracks on 11th place with 31 points.

In other games, TN Stars’ fine form continued when they beat Mighty Tigers 2-1 whereas Civil Service FC edged out Mafco 1-0 both games played on Saturday.

The league comprises 16 teams who play on round robin basis of home and away with the team earning the most points winning the title and bottom three relegated and are replaced by three regional league champions.

The elite league started in 1986 and Bullets have won it the most, 14 times followed by Silver eight and Wanderers six.

Warriors anchor the log table with 17 points from 26 games and are surely headed for relegation.
