Malawi UEFA CL : Malawian defender Petro basks in group stage qualification

Moldova-based Malawian defender Charles Petro will play in the Uefa Champions League group stages for the first time in his four-year-old professional career.

Petro featured for Moldova’s Sheriff Tiraspol as they drew 0-0 with Dinamo Zagreb to qualify for the Champions League group stages on Wednesday evening.

Sheriff have qualified for the group stages 3-0 on aggregate having won the first leg at home by such a wide margin.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets player replaced midfielder Dimitris Kolovos in the 74th minute of the playoff played away.

Petro has joined compatriots such as Dan Chitsulo and Esau Kanyenda in gracing the Champions League group stages.

The Malawian defender has featured regularly for Sheriff in the Champions League qualifying stages.

He featured alongside compatriot Peter Banda, who has since signed for Tanzania champions Simba SC of Tanzania from Bullets following the expiry of his loan spell with Sheriff.

Petro is a member of the Malawi squad that qualified for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.

Sheriff are in Pot 4 of the Champions League draw which will take place later on Thursday evening.
