Africa Soccer 2022 World Cup qualifiers : Benin earn a precious away win over Madagascar

Steve Mounié

Benin’s Squirrels had a successful trip to Antananarivo on Thursday afternoon as they beat the Barea 1-0 to secure all three points as they launch their 2022 World Cup qualifiers with style.

Brest striker Steve Mounié was the one who scored the winning goal for Benin with a header as he concerted from a corner kicked by Cèbio Soukou in the 22nd minute.

Madagascar’s pressure was very strong during the last quarter of an hour but the Beninese held on, thanks in particular to a stop by Allagbé, and they will present themselves in a position of strength on matchday 2 on Monday at home against DR Congo, held to a draw by Tanzania (1-1) earlier today.

On the other hand, Madagascar will already challenge Tanzania on matchday 2.
