Dstv Premiership Baxter wants Chiefs to become ‘difficult’ opponent to play against

Kaizer Chiefs

Coach Stuart Baxter has said his ultimate aim is to turn South Africa giants Kaizer Chiefs into a ‘more difficult team to play against.’

The Englishman said this in a post-match press conference in South Africa today ahead of Sunday’s clash against DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.

What we want to do is to make sure we are a more difficult team to play against in terms of being efficient in terms of closing down certain spaces [which] opponents want, not just Sundowns but more opponents are looking for them [and] Sundowns are probably better than most [in terms of exploiting such spaces,” he told reporters.

Baxter, who replaced Gavin Hunt a few months ago, said Chiefs must also learn to find attacking routes against tight defences on the break.

We are also looking at our efficiency in terms of us picking our way through established defences and that is one thing we have got to get better [on],” he said.

“[ We are ] looking at changing the shape of the team when we are defending to try and be able to break out a little bit more expansively.”

Chiefs recalled Baxter to steady the ship after many seasons of struggles for the club.

Chiefs struggled in the league last season and this cost Hunt his job despite that he helped the Soweto side reach the CAF Champions League semifinal stages before assistant coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard then Baxter stepped in to oversee the remaining games, including reach the final which they lost 3-0 to Al Ahly.

Chiefs have started this campaign promisingly, winning and drawing one game each to settle for fourth place on the log table.
