The club confirmed this in a statement on its website;

“The Blues legend took charge of training at USM Finch Farm on Tuesday morning as the squad began its preparations for the visit of Aston Villa to Goodison Park on Saturday (12.30pm GMT).

Ferguson will be supported in his caretaker position by John Ebbrell and Leighton Baines, along with Goalkeeping Coach Alan Kelly.

It is the second time Ferguson has taken caretaker charge at the Club, having guided the Blues to five points from three league games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in December 2019.

“An announcement on a permanent managerial appointment will be made in due course. “

Axed Everton manager Rafa Benitez had in a statement on Monday said he was not aware the task in the club will be demanding.

He said after his sacking that the financial situation of the club and injuries made things worse for him

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy,” Benitez said following his departure.

It was a big challenge, both emotionally and in terms of sport. My love for this city, for Merseyside and its people, made me accept this challenge, but it is only when you are inside that you realize the magnitude of the task.

From the very first day, my staff and myself worked as we always do, with commitment and full dedication. We didn’t only have to get results, but we also had to win over people’s hearts.
