Dstv Premiership Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs brace for Soweto Derby

All is set for the Soweto Derby in South Africa where Orlando Pirates host traditional rivals Kaizer Chiefs at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams are bidding to stay within the top four places on the log table hence winning is necessary in this DStv Premiership clash.

Chiefs and Pirates occupy third and fourth places on 32 points apiece with goal aggregate separating them on the log table. Royal AM are on second position with 33 points.

Pirates wasted the chance to go second during the week when they dropped points in the goalless draw against Cape Town City.

If the Buccaneers learnt something from that midweek action then surely it was that superior ball possession counts for nothing if you cannot put the ball at the back of the net.

Pirates need to have striker Kwame Peprah and company in sharp form upfront to unlock Chiefs defence.

The Buccaneers lost 2-1 in the first round of the league hence apart from the maximum points; they also have Soweto bragging rights at stake.

Pirates will be without midfielders Goodman Mosele and Thembinkosi Lorch due to injuries.

Ahead of the match, Pirates coach Mandla Ncikazi said: “We have to make our people happy.”

Pirates have dominated the Soweto Derby in the recent past having won five games compared to four for Chiefs with the other game ending in a draw.

For Chiefs, they should be seeking to maintain their momentum even though they will be without in-form striker Samir Nurković who is suspended for the match.

Defender S’fiso Hlanti and midfielder Cole Alexander have also been ruled out due to injuries.

Nonetheless, Chiefs have enough depth with Khama Billiat and Keegan Dolly capable of deciding games in a flash.
