CAF Champions League Jesualdo Ferreira Tastes First Defeat As Zamalek Near Of Exiting CCL

Midfielder Yahya Jabrane converted a penalty three minutes into the second half following a bizarre handball by defender Mahmoud El-Wensh as Wydad completed the double over Zamalek, having also won 3-1 in Casablanca last month.

The defeat spoiled the first appearance of Jesualdo Ferreira in Zamalek’s dugout after the veteran Portuguese coach returned to the club he led to a rare domestic double in 2015.

In their first three Champions League group stage games, Zamalek drew twice with Petro de Luanda and Sagrada Esperança and fell to a defeat against Wydad Casablanca in Morocco.

That put them in third place in Group D with only two points, four behind second-placed Wydad, with three games remaining.

After Wydad scored, Zamalek went all out trying to find the back of the nets. But cracking their opponents’ defense was not an easy task.In the 64th minute, Zizo nearly equalized through a free-kick. But Tagnaouti was there to secure Wydad nets.

The situation didn’t change much after that, the White Knights completely dominated ball possession. But it remained unfruitful until the full-time whistle.

Zamalek are now near exiting the tournament as Petro de Luanda only need one victory from three games to officially knock out Ferreira’s men from the tournament.
