After their 1-0 loss to Mamelod Sundowns in the Champions League, Mosimane said CAF have decreased their efforts in implementing VAR.

The South African tactician believes that if countries such as Egypt are able to use VAR in every game, CAF would also be able to do so. Mosimane continued by saying that “we are 20 years behind on the implementation of VAR”, saying that nothing much changed since the Issa Hayatou era.

CAF has started implementing VAR in its competitions since 2018. But only the knockout stages of the Champions League and Confederation Cup and the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations have experienced it so far.

Defending his organization and their president Patrice Motsepe, CAF Head of Media and Operations Luxolo September said the African football gorvening body has been working on making them more financially stable.

September also said that disparity between African countries also makes it difficult for them to implement VAR everywhere.

All AFCON 2021 matches were on VAR. The inaugural CAF Women’s Champions league was on VAR. And the upcoming 2022 World Cup African qualifiers will be on VAR.” Said September according to iDiski Times

And then there are costs. Africa is vast. And while some countries have this infrastructure, some don’t. These are objective realities.

“The costs of rolling out VAR throughout Africa and what you will need to to do, are just very high and can run up to millions of dollars in a single month.

“We know in some African leagues, they are already using VAR. And that is fantastic. I know that the CAF referees’ department is actively teaching and empowering many referees on VAR.

“There is progress. But it’s not something we should approach in an emotional or sentimental way. But we must be practical and give an objective view of our continent.

“President Motsepe is committed to this mission, to introduce technology and VAR in football. He has demonstrated that already. And we should also not forget that the pyramids were not built in one weekend.” Concluded September on the VAR implementation in Africa.

This is work in progress. We all know that when President Motsepe came in, CAF was sitting in the red. We need money and resources in this project. But we will make an announcement in due course on this.” September added.
