Former Jomo Cosmos striker Esau Kanyenda has backed Mamelodi Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile to surpass South Africa’s DStv Premiership scoring records of Wilfred Mugeyi and Collins Mbesuma.

Kanyenda spoke about the Namibian’s chances of scoring more goals for Sundowns after he bagged a hat trick in the 6-0 humiliation of Golden Arrows on Tuesday.

“I think at the rate he is scoring, he can surpass such records as there are still some [five] games to go,” the ex-Polokwane City forward said.

The former Malawi’s Flames forward went on to explain attributes that make Shalulile unstoppable in the attacking third.

“He has a wonderful work rate. He puts so much effort in his play and he is always at the right place and at the right time. Height also plays a part in his scoring abilities,” he added.

The former Highlands Park front-man took his league tally of the season to 21 goals, surpassing Siyabonga Nomvethe’s 20 goals he scored in the 201/12 season with Moroka Swallows.

Shalulile also matched Ndlanya’s 21 goals registered in the 1998/99 season with Kaizer Chiefs, two seasons after Mugeyi had bagged 22 goals while at Umtata Bush Bucks, now defunct.

Over and above that, Mbesuma’s 25-goal feat remains surpassed despite that the burly Zambian achieved it in the 2004/05 campaign at Chiefs.

Kanyenda also penned his record in the PSL after bagging 11 goals, including a hat trick and two braces in seven consecutive league matches in the 2001/02 season. Such a record remains instant.

The Malawian left Cosmos in 2003 to sign for Rostov FC in Russia where he also played for a number of teams including FC Lokomotiv Moscow.

He returned to South Africa in 2013 to join Polokwane City in the National First Division and top-scored as the Rise and Shine earned promotion to the top-flight league.
