Friendly Peseiro First Game In Charge Of Super Eagles Ends In Defeat

Jose Paseiro’s first game in charge of the Super Eagles ended in a 2-1 loss to El Tri of Mexico in an international friendly match at AT & T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, early Sunday.

After drawing the Eagles equal with a stunning header, Cyriel Dessers scored his first goal for the club.

In six matches with Mexico, the Super Eagles have yet to win, losing three and drawing three.

On June 2, Peseiro’s team will play another friendly against Ecuador.

The Super Eagles struggled to gain a footing in the contest as Mexico dominated the early exchanges.

On 12 minutes, Santiago Gimenez gave Mexico a merited lead when his initial effort from a headed pass struck Uzoho and bounced into the net.

Andres Guardado almost extended Mexico’s advantage after intercepting a long pass, but Uzoho saved his effort.

Uzoho was put into action again in the 31st minute, but he saved a well-struck shot by Guardado with a great save.

Innocent Bonke was injured before the start of the second half and was replaced by Faisal Sani of Katsina United.

Mexico carried on from where they left off in the first half, almost doubling their advantage early in the second half, but Semi Ajayi cleared a dangerous cross for a corner.

Dessers’ downward header from a wonderful cross from Bassey was too strong for the keeper to handle on 54 minutes, bringing the Super Eagles level.

Two minutes later, Troost-Ekong blasted a cross into his own net, putting the Mexicans up 2-1.

After getting the ball inside the box, Terem Moffi should have equalised for the Eagles, but his shot went wide.

Roberto Alvarado received a pass inside the box a few minutes later but was unable to keep his shot down.

With six minutes remaining, Diego Lainez almost doubled Mexico’s lead, but his low effort deflected off Troost-Ekong and went away for a corner.
