South Africa are through to the final of the 2022 WAFCON following a 1-0 victory over their COSAFA neighbours Zambia.

A game dominated by the Copper Queens saw South Africa scored from the spot through Linda Motlhalo in added time.

After coming off the bench to start against Tunisia, Melinda Kgadieta was reinstated to the Banyana starting lineup, and Mapula Kgoale was moved to the bench.

After eight minutes, Lubandji was left unmarked at the far post and the Zambians had a good opportunity to break the score, but she missed the goal.

Banyana, on the other hand, found it difficult to penetrate the Zambian final third in open play, which made it difficult to compel Catherine Musonda to make a significant stop.

Andila Dlamini, the other goalie, had the busiest first 45 minutes of the two, but she was able to hold her own whenever the Zambians sent shots at goal.

At the beginning of the second half, Desiree Ellis decided to make two substitutions, substituting Kgoale and Hildah Magaia for Thalea Smidt and Kgadiete.

Banyana believed they had been handed a penalty just before the hour mark for Lushomo Mweemba’s tackle on Noxolo Cesane, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) confirmed that a foul had actually been committed because the challenge occurred outside of the penalty area.

As extra time approached, Bafana came close to scoring when Magaia and Jermaine Seoposenwe swapped passes, but Musonda deflected her close-range shot away.

Banyana, though, received a reprieve in the second minute of time added on after being given a penalty as a result of a VAR review.

Linda Motlhalo calmly converted the penalty kick to advance Banyana to the WAFCON 2022 final as they awaits the winner between Nigeria and Morocco.
