AFCON-20 AFCON U20: Senegal Defeat Gambia To Be Crowned Champions

The Senegalese Young Teranga Lions defeated the neighboring Gambia 2-0 on Saturday to win the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in team history.

In the Egyptian capital of Cairo, goals from midfielder Mamadou Camara and forward Sulaymane Faye were sufficient for Senegal to defeat their bitter rivals.

The West African team earned a spot in Saturday’s championship game by winning all of their games without giving up a goal.

After placing second in 2015, 2017 and 2019, the Young Teranga Lions competed in their fourth TotalEnergies U-20 AFCON championship game.

Malick Daf’s group has achieved continental success in the past year, following in the footsteps of the senior Teranga Lions, the beach soccer national team, and the home-based national team.

The Young Teranga Lions got off to a stronger start against the Young Scorpions at the Cairo International Stadium because to their aggressive style of play.

Sulaymane Faye’s header from a cross down the right channel gave the Young Teranga Lions the lead six minutes in.

Faye was able to head into an open goal because the Gambian defense failed to stop Pape Diallo’s cross.

The Young Teranga Lions, together with Alieu Gibba and Mahmud Bajo, survived the early setback to maintain possession.

Sulaymane Faye, who was advancing, was struck by a long-range shot from Lamine Camara that Pa Ebou Dampha parried. Sulaymane Faye failed to score after 28 minutes.

In front of the CF Talavera forward who was unable to add to his tally, Pa Ebou Dampha made himself large.

The Young Scorpions attempted to reenter the game after the break, but their defense was simply too powerful.

Ten minutes after the restart, Senegal increased their advantage thanks to RS Berkane midfielder Mamadou Camara. To defeat the feeble Pa Ebou Dampha, the tall Mamadou Camara steered home a corner.

Lamine Camara and Mamadou Camara were in charge for Malick Daf’s team as the Young Teranga Lions dominated possession in the opening moments of the second half.

Mansour Mbye and Muhamed Sawaneh were substituted in for Bailo Bah and Modou Marong by The Gambia coach Abdoulie Bojang.

The modification increased the firepower of the Young Scorpions’ ineffectual strike. Kajally Drammeh, a Cape Town winger, was sent free by Mbye’s play-through on the left side of the Pitch, and his ball into the box was cleared for a corner.

Samba Diallo, the captain of Senegal, came close on two occasions to extending their advantage over their neighbors. The youthful Dinamo Kiev player blocked Alagie Saine’s clearance toward the Gambian goal after watching his half volley agonizingly miss the target.

In stoppage time, substitute Mouhamed Gueye fiercely struck the Young Scorpions post. Just beyond the Gambian area, the American Goree midfielder was played in to shoot against the crossbar.

The WAFU-A winners held on to win the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time ever.
