FIFA U20 WORLD CUP FIFA Confirms Argentina As Host Nation for U20 World Cup

Argentina will host the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2023, replacing Indonesia.

After FIFA stripped Indonesia of its hosting rights, the South American country submitted a formal bid to host the tournament.

The FIFA Bureau decided to award Argentina the hosting rights, with the tournament set to begin on May 20.

The Nigerian Flying Eagles, two-time World Cup finalists, are among the 24 teams scheduled to compete in Argentina.

Nigeria finished third in the recently concluded CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and the team is expected to perform well at the World Cup in 2023.

Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, praised Argentina’s bravery in hosting the tournament, saying that the country’s footballing tradition made it a natural choice to host the event.

We all know Argentine football, and surely it can host a competition of this level,” Infantino said at a news conference in Paraguay.

Argentina is the most successful team in the competition’s history, having won six times.

Argentina last won a tournament in Canada in 2007, capping a run of five titles in seven tournaments.

The 24 qualifying nations for the 2023 tournament will be divided into six groups of four teams.

The top two finishers in each group, as well as the four third-place teams with the most points, advance to the knockout stage.

The Round of 16 begins a single-elimination bracket that leads to the final, similar to the senior men’s World Cup format.
