Manchester United Ten Hag Unfazed With Manchester United Defense

Erik ten Hag is less worried about Manchester United’s defense than he is about his team’s attack when they go to Sevilla on Thursday.

Several important defenders for United have been absent, notably Lisandro Martinez, who will be out for the rest of the year.

In last week’s 2-2 draw against Sevilla at home in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal, Martinez suffered a broken metatarsal.

Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire’s own goals caused United to improbably blow a two-goal lead at Old Trafford, but Ten Hag isn’t concerned about a repetition.

After a string of wasteful performances, he wants to see United improve in front of goal. They have fallen short of their xG in seven straight Premier League games, losing their last two games by an average of 1.5 goals.

“Our organisation all over the pitch is quite good. We need to do better attacking,” Ten Hag explained, adding: “I am confident that we can score goals (today).”

Marcus Rashford’s comeback would help Ten Hag’s cause; the forward is “available” after traveling with the team, but a decision regarding his fitness will be made on game day.

Despite a rocky beginning under Ten Hag, David de Gea is making an impression at the other end of the field.

In the early weeks of the season, the goalkeeper’s poor ability to play out with his feet produced issues and seemed to suggest that he was not a good fit for the manager’s methods.

However, De Gea has continued to be United’s starting goalkeeper and now leads the Golden Glove race with 14 Premier League shutouts.

Stopping goals, that is the main job for a goalkeeper,” Ten Hag said.

“Everyone has their own particular style. Nowadays, in possession, it has become more and more important at top levels.

“But at the end of the day it is about stopping goals, shots, crosses, one-on-ones. I think David is a complete goalkeeper.”
