athletics Kenya’s Omanyala highlights list of stars for Florence Diamond League

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala will be among the star-studded list of athletes who will compete at the third Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season in Florence on June 2.

Omanyala, who is the fastest man in the world over 100m so far this year following his 9.84 in Nairobi last Sunday during the Kip Keino Classic at Kasarani Stadium, will line up alongside the likes of world champion Fred Kerley and Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs in the men’s 100m.

Others making the list are reigning Diamond League champion Trayvon Bromell and fellow Americans Erriyon Knighton and Kenny Bednarek while Olympic pole vault champion Katie Moon will also take part.

On Sunday, the 27-year-old Omanyala brought down the roof at Kasarani Stadium with a scintillating display to leave President William Ruto out of his seat and cruise to an emphatic victory in a time of 9.84 seconds.

Speaking after the race, Omanyala confirmed he had shifted his focus to the Diamond League in Rabat, Morocco on May 28.

He said: “I am now focused on my next assignment in the Rabat Diamond League and I know it will not be a walk in the park. So I must get ready if I have to win there [in Morocco] but of course, I will give my best to come home with victory.”

In Morocco, Omanyala is set to come face to face with Italy and Olympic 100m champion Marcel Jacobs and world 100m champion Fred Kerley of the USA.

Before the Kip Keino race, Omanyala set a new African and State record in Atlanta City Games in Georgia, USA, after clocking 14.89 seconds in the 150m race.
