African players abroad Clarke Oduor: Barnsley FC release Kenya star after loan spell

Kenya defender Clarke Oduor is among several players released by EFL Championship side Barnleys FC ahead of the new campaign.

The 23-year-old Oduor moved to Barnsley on August 31, 2019, where he signed a four-year contract and in total managed 48 appearances and scored one goal.

Barnsley confirmed the release of Oduor, who was returning from a loan spell with Hartlepool United by stating on their official website: “Barnsley can confirm its annual retained list, which has been submitted to the EFL following the conclusion of the 22-23 campaign.

“Players aged 24 and over as of June 30, 2023, who have been released include Clarke Oduor.”

Oduor started his career at Leeds United’s academy, signing a professional contract on January 16, 2017, and made his professional debut on January 6, 2019, coming on as an 85th-minute substitute during a 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers in the third round of the FA Cup.

He signed a new contract with Leeds, extending his deal until the end of the 2019-20 season with the option of a further year, and played a key role as Leeds won the PDL Northern League championship as well as the national PDL championship, by beating Birmingham City in the final.

At Barnsley, he scored his first goal in the 91st minute of the last game of the 2019-20 season against Brentford to keep Barnsley in the Championship. On September 1, 2022, Oduor signed for Hartlepool United on a loan deal and scored his first goal in a 2-1 defeat to Swindon Town.

Odour, who plays as a left-back but can also feature as an attacking midfielder and winger, was eligible for both the Kenyan national team Harambee Stars and England’s Three Lions but he picked Kenya and made his senior debut in the 2-1 friendly win against Zambia on October 9, 2020.
