FIFA World Cup FIFA U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles Forces Mascherano To Resign

After leading his team to a Round of 16 exit at the FIFA U20 World Cup, Argentina U20 Coach Javier Mascherano submitted his letter of resignation to the Argentina Football Association (AFA).

A loud home audience that had arrived in huge numbers to support their national team was stunned by the Flying Eagles’ 2-0 victory due to two goals in the second half from Ibrahim Mohammed and Haliru Seriki. The victory dampened the night.

However, Nigeria will enter the next round with confidence since they were more proficient and difficult to break down than their opponents.

In response to inquiries after the game, Mascherano informed the Buenos Aires Times that he had submitted his letter of resignation to Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentina Football Association.

He added that if Tapia rejected the resignation letter, he would still desire to hold the role.

“I have great relationship with AFA President, Claudio Tapia, and I will continue until he doesn’t want me.

“He has my my resignation letter on his desk but my idea is to continue because I feel I am good enough for this role and as long as they believe the same I will be here.

Argentina’s exit at the round of 16 is disappointing.

Despite having fared well in past tournaments, the nation initially missed out on qualifying for this year’s world cup.

The team was only given a spot at the very last minute because FIFA stripped Indonesia of its hosting duties and gave Argentina the tournament.

Mascherano was under pressure going into the competition because they didn’t qualify for it.
