Friendly Namwamba pledges support for Harambee Stars ahead of trip

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has reiterated the government’s support to Kenya national team Harambee Stars, as they prepare for the upcoming friendly matches as well as Caf and Fifa engagements.

Speaking while he paid the team a courtesy call at Nyayo Stadium, the CS acknowledged the government’s key role in ensuring the success of all its national teams and committed to rallying behind the Harambee Stars.

“We want to make sure that we offer the support necessary for you to perform well in international assignments. The Federation has given us a program of the preparations and we want you to be as ready as possible when the qualifiers start,” said the CS, as he addressed the players.

“I wish you all the best. I know you are preparing to leave for Mauritius as part of your preparations. I will be cheering you from Nairobi, please win your games.”

FKF President Nick Mwendwa, on his part, thanked the government for coming through for the team at a time when the Federation is shaking off a year-long suspension from football.

“I must say asante sana to the CS for committing to support the Harambee Stars. Government support is key if we are to achieve our goals and thus it’s our hope that moving forward, FKF shall cooperate with the Ministry of Sports to ensure the smooth running of all our national teams,” said the FKF president.

Stars will depart for Mauritius on Saturday, June 10, 2023, for a Four-nation tournament that features the hosts, Pakistan and Djibouti. The tourney runs from June 11 to June 18, 2023, with matches scheduled to be played at the Anjalay Coopen Stadium.
