AFCON U23 TOURNAMENT AFCONU23: Mali Turns Focus On Third Place Game For Olympic Ticket

The TotalEnergies CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 will provide Mali’s U23 team with another opportunity to contend for a spot in the Olympic Games as they get ready to meet Guinea in a play-off match.

Mali’s coach, Badara Alou Diallo, hailed his players for their display of spirit despite their 4-3 loss on penalties after a 2-2 draw against hosts Morocco in the semi-final on Tuesday night in Rabat.

“It’s frustrating because we had the potential to turn the game around during regular time.

Penalty shootouts are always challenging, especially in such an intense atmosphere, but my players showed great character,” expressed Diallo.

The coach recognised that in these types of contests, the home club normally has an advantage because of the enthusiastic backing of their supporters.

The U23 squad from Mali will now turn their attention to the vital game against Guinea, hoping to build on their advantages and guarantee their qualifying for the eagerly awaited Paris Olympics.
