COSAFA Cosafa Cup: Sichone gutted with Zambia despite Seychelles victory

Zambia assistant coach Moses Sichone has explained his disappointment despite his side registering a 4-2 victory against Seychelles in the ongoing Hollywoodbets Cosafa Cup on Tuesday.

In the Group B fixture at Princess Magogo Stadium, Chipolopolo needed goals from Albert Kangwanda, Killian Kanguluma, Golden Mashata, and Frederick Mulambia to grab all three points. However, with Zambia cruising to victory without conceding, Seychelles scored two late goals courtesy of Brandon Labrosse and Warren Mellie but Chipolopolo stayed firm at the back to see through the win and qualify for the semi-finals.

Sichone has admitted the two goals Zambia’s conceded have left him irked, terming them as “silly” goals, and further warned his players to pull up their socks as they head into the crucial stage of the tournament in Durban, South Africa.

“I was happy when we scored 4-0, and then after that, I don’t know what went wrong,” he said in a post-match interview,” adding: “We made a few changes; we thought we should bring some fresh guys who didn’t play a lot of minutes, but we could see that when you have a lot of players who don’t have experience, you will start experiencing such things.”

Sichone added: “I must say I am quite disappointed because of the attitude. I mean, if you score four goals, the game is done. You need to concentrate. It’s just unfortunate that each game we are conceding silly goals.”

The tactician further described most of his players’ overall performances as disappointing: “We tried to give everyone a chance, and in a tournament like this, they were supposed to show the country that they are ready and want to put pressure on those guys that are playing on the main team, but it’s unfortunate.”

Zambia finished second in Group B with six points while Malawi won the group with nine points. Chipolopolo lost the opener 1-0 against Malawi before recovering to beat Comoros 2-1 and now Seychelles 4-2.
