FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP FIFAWWW: USA fights back to draw against Netherlands

USA came from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in their second match at the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup on Thursday.

In the Group E contest at Wellington Regional Stadium, the Netherlands quickly raced ahead, with Jill Roord slotting in a strike from inside the US box in the 16th minute, a lead that persisted through half-time.

But the US fired back at the top of the second half, as Lindsey Horan rebounded from a harsh tackle then scored off a textbook corner header. The draw snapped a streak of 13 consecutive wins at the World Cup for the USWNT but kept the Americans atop Group E with one match remaining against Portugal on Aug. 1.

Netherlands manager Andries Jonker dominated the tactical battle in the first half with a 3-1-4-2 formation that ripped the USWNT’s midfield apart and produced the opening goal on a shot from the top of the box at the 17-minute mark.

Meanwhile, USA coach Vlatko Andnovski went with the same starting lineup from the Vietnam match and used his only sub of the game to begin the second half when Rose Lavelle came in for Savannah DeMelo.
