Transfers Pochettino explains Kepa absence against Liverpool

Mauricio Pochettino has explained why Kepa Arrizabalaga wasn’t in the Chelsea squad for their Premier League opener against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Media reports have surfaced over the past 24 hours linking the Spain international with a move away from Stamford Bridge – and Pochettino said after the game: “It’s something that has happened very quickly,” he said, adding: “And it’s a situation that is correct.”

Pochettino added: “I explained to your colleagues before the game, he has to explore a different situation, a difficult possibility. That is why. Yesterday, we were talking and, for us, the decision was to have all the players who are committed and thinking of being at Chelsea for the season.

“We will see. If we have something to inform you on, we will inform.”

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was signed from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer, came into the starting XI for Chelsea’s opener and the 25-year-old played his part in the pulsating 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Kepa is about to join Real Madrid. The Italian journalist reported on Twitter that Kepa will leave Chelsea and move to the La Liga outfit on a season-long loan deal.
