Uganda FUFA Super 8: BUL FC crowned after defeating URA FC

Ugandan Premier League outfit BUL FC clinched the FUFA Super Eight 2023 edition after beating URA 3-1 in an exciting penalty shootout on Sunday.

It was a cagy affair but with limited chances though as much of the action was in the middle of the park, with the contest finishing 0-0 in the regular 90 minutes. Super substitute Joel Mutakubwa produced another superheroic display in BUL colors, scoring yet another decider and saving three penalties at the MTN Omondi stadium.

After giving the Eastern Giants a 3-1 advantage, the goalkeeper made himself big between the uprights to punch out Sharif Kimbowa’s effort which confirmed BUL’s victory. Hudu Mulikya and Nicholas Kabonge had both earlier seen the goalkeeper save their spot kicks with ease. Joshua Lubwama was the only tax collector to beat Mutakubwa from the spot.

Lawrence Tezikya opened the doors for the Eastern Giants with a piece of art before Jerome Kirya tucked in his. Ronald Otti had his kick saved by Dennis Otim. This means BUL have won their second trophy in history. The early moments of the game were chiefly a battle of the midfield where Lubwama and Pascal Ngobi ran the show for their respective sides. Reagan Kalyowa and Samuel Ssekamatte only went close for BUL as the break was approaching.

BUL started the second half in the ascendancy following the introduction of Alex Kitata and Tezikya. The Eastern Giants had some quick-fire opportunities, with one of them seeing Hillary Onek’s inviting cross go out begging. There was somehow a scare for BUL midway through the game, with substitute Kitata being forced off with an injury, Joel Madondo was then trusted to lead the quest for goals.

However, both teams did not create enough chances in normal time and therefore, the spot kicks had to decide the winner. Next up for the Eastern Giants is a clash against Bright Stars in their opening Uganda Premier League match at Kavumba on Friday, September 15.
